Environmental protection – together with you

Ahoi Camp Fehmarn is a certified Ecocamp!

Since April 2024 our Ahoi Camp Fehmarn is now officially certified by ECOCAMPING e.V. as an Ecocamp. We are very happy about that! Of course, we are aware of the special responsibility that comes with our location in a nature reserve. In everything we do, our central concern is to have as little impact on our environment as possible.

We are actively committed to protecting the dunes, are involved in planting campaigns and offer regional and organic food. Our menu also includes a variety of vegetarian options, and we consistently use recup instead of plastic. We also invest in renewable energies such as solar thermal energy and carry out regular CO2 balances. Our commitment to a sustainable future is also reflected in our Green-Rate and our insect hotels.

We are proud to have already implemented many measures and look forward to achieving even more together with our great team and you. Because for us, sustainability is not just a certificate, but an ongoing commitment.

Let’s shape the future together – for the environment and for ourselves!

Tangible and »green«. This is what we have to offer you:

  • Interesting dune protection excursions (for children + adults). Attention: Will be offered again from the 2025 season.
  • Our new »open-air laboratory« (discovery and participation for children – in/at our construction trailer). Expected start in late summer/fall 2024.
  • A 10% green rate for you if you arrive by e‑car or bike
  • Many sustainable + organic products in our minimarket
  • You will find e‑charging stations on our site in the future
  • Purchase of a new biological wastewater treatment plant
  • Installation of water-saving taps in sanitary facilities
  • Cleaning of sanitary facilities only with ecologically tested detergents
  • Use of solar collectors for hot water in sanitary facilities
  • Greening of the square with native plants that require little watering
  • Our restaurant and café have eliminated disposable tableware.
  • Dune grass planting campaigns
  • Coöperation with the energy consulting company »Wecologic« to identify potential improvements for our site at an early stage.

The investigation and research laboratory is financed by us and operated together with »Haff und Huk e.V.« and the Fehmarn Island School. It enables children and school classes to explore and understand nature through workshops such as adventure hikes on the beach followed by microscopy.

The open-air laboratory is expected to go into operation in late summer/autumn 2024.

Since the foundation of »Ahoi Bullis Campervermietung GmbH« in 2015, the energy consulting company »Wecologic« (then still under the name »Arktik«) has been supporting us in the areas of sustainability and climate protection.
One of the first measures we implemented together with »wecologic« back in 2015 was carbon balancing and the subsequent offsetting of greenhouse gas emissions from our rental vehicles. In this context, we have jointly supported a high-quality Gold Standard climate protection project in Kenya for several years, which provides access to clean drinking water in rural regions. We also focused early on transparent communication of our climate protection measures, not least to make our customers aware of the advantages of choosing regional destinations (e.g. Schleswig-Holstein, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, etc.) in order to promote vacations without climate-damaging air travel. In 2021, »Wecologic« also took on the task of supporting »Campers Friend GmbH« in developing a comprehensive sustainability concept for »Ahoi Camp Fehmarn«. In addition to numerous measures for resource and energy efficiency, this also meant implementing a climate management system for the annual monitoring of the corporate carbon footprint of the entire camp.

You can also get involved:

  • Waste separation: in the camper: wet vs. dry | at our waste island: yellow/blue/brown/black
  • Purchase more unpackaged + regional food + organic/hard soap, organic Toilet additives etc.
  • Litter collection campaigns on the beach for children and adults with a small thank you
  • Use of Recup/Rebowl

What else we have planned:

  • Transforming the central waste facility into an educational island to teach the importance of recycling
  • Green roofs
  • Try to minimise public lighting when camping. Use of downlighting warm white LEDs and motion detectors to protect insects, birds, bats, fish and amphibians.
  • Nature and environmental education workshops for our younger guests
  • Development of a conservation and sustainability plan, including monitoring of dune protection by an external company.
  • Construction of eco-toilets
  • Does your electricity come from the socket? We would like to feed in: Green electricity from photovoltaic cells
  • Use of rainwater
  • Support for climate-friendly projects
  • Climate-friendly »voluntourism programs«
  • more

Do you have any great ideas about what else we can do together? Then write to us at moin@ahoi-camp-fehmarn.de.
We look forward to hearing from you.

ECOCAMPING

Campsites that are committed to sustainability can now hardly avoid the Ecocamping label. We have held the »Ecocamping site« award since April 2024.

Who or what is ECOCAMPING?

Camping is a vacation in nature, ECOCAMPING is a vacation with nature. ECOCAMPING has been advising and supporting campsites on their way to greater sustainability for more than 25 years. Sustainable companies are characterized by sustainable, environmentally friendly and socially responsible business practices. Combining economy and ecology in the camping industry is the basic idea behind ECOCAMPING.

How big is the ECOCAMPING network?

Today, over 200 campsites with 12 million overnight stays per year have an ECOCAMPING award. This means that three to four million people a year go on sustainable vacations certified by ECOCAMPING – that’s a lot!

The ECOCAMPING network stands for vacations in harmony with nature. To receive the ECOCAMPING award for exemplary commitment to environmental protection and nature conservation, campsites must meet certain criteria. Together with ECOCAMPING, the award-winning campsites then make an important contribution to safeguarding the basis of life for present and future generations.
Combining economy and ecology in the camping industry is the basic idea behind ECOCAMPING. Sustainable campsites are therefore characterized in particular by sustainable, environmentally friendly and socially responsible management.
